Excerpt

“Will ye cease fighting me if I explain?”

“Aye.”

The hold around her hands released as he watched her closely. But she knew better than to fight him. It didn’t mean she’d stop trying to escape. Nay, she just had to choose her moment more carefully. The warrior was obviously determined to take her.

She made the mistake of holding his gaze as he made to climb off and her chest tightened. He paused and they stared at each other. Emotion simmered behind his gaze, the anger gone, and Alana couldn’t tell if the emotion was targeted at her or something else. All she knew was the feeling of having his strong weight on top of her, his gaze boring into her, stole all sensible thought and turned her into one quivering mass of sensations.

Endless moments stretched on as she waited for Morgann to look away, to break the connection, but he stared brazenly on as his gaze trailed over her face. What did he see? As she gaped up at him, the irate warrior dissolved into a flesh and blood man and she recalled how much she used to adore him. When Morgann was banished from her father’s lands, she’d been heartbroken at losing her friend, but with the blazing sensation of having him flattened against her, she remembered it wasn’t just the loss of his friendship that hurt her so. She’d always silently hoped Morgann would play a bigger role in her future.

But that didn’t change the fact he was taking her against her will and she would not go meekly, regardless of what she once felt for him. She wouldn’t put herself and her clan in danger all because they’d once been friends. If only she could ignore the sensuous pull of his lips or the darkening of his pupils as a rough finger drew a path over her cheek.

A crack ripped across the sky and they both jolted. Pushing to standing, Morgann helped her up and grimaced as he eyed her. Aware of the mud coating her, she swiped a hand across her face as her cheeks heated. Tilting her head up, she hoped the rain would at least be useful for something and not only rinse away some of the dirt but also cool her down. The way the man made her skin blister was extremely disconcerting.

Morgann muttered a curse, drawing her attention back to him as he raked a hand through his hair and yanked some rope from the leather pouch hanging from his saddle. As he turned back to her, rope held out, Alana shrank away.

“Ye cannae mean to tie me up, surely?”

Top ten - Words/Topics in a book that turned me off

Okay so this is a really hard post for me. Because the truth is I think anything can work in a book depending upon the way its written!! I honestly think that and I am willing to give anything a try. SO, I took this question to my Facebook Fans and below are the answers that I got. Do you agree? Disagree? Oh, and there are THREE things I added to the list on my own. (yes, I will note which three are mine so you can laugh at me, ha ha ha)

10. When people turn into rats. (drives me insane!) - This is the one I added. LOL. It’s silly but it’s the truth.

9. My husband doesn’t like the word “aback”. Naturally I try to use it in conversation as much as possible. ha ha ha ha. - I added this one too. LOL!

8. When characters cheat on each other.

7. When the main character has zero common sense.

6. Bad editing / Poor grammar

5. An abusive main character

4. When words or phrases are repeated over and over again.

3. Run- on sentences (I think I may be guilty of this in my books…. yikes!)

2. Books where the author talks down to the reader.

1. When books contain abuse toward animals or when animals are hurt or die. - This is mine as well.

Excerpt -

Chapter One
The cat flattened itself to the carpet near the front bookcase, ears lost against its orange-striped head, frozen in fear. A terrified hiss leaked through his open mouth and, slinking backward, the cat spun and ran toward the back of the store.  Catching a brief flash of orange out of the corner of her eye, Baillie shook her head. “Now what’s gotten into Sebastian? Must be a mouse.” She fanned her painted fingernails along the spines of books stacked on the shelf beside her. Listening to the hushed clicking sounds of her nails against the bindings as she walked down the aisle, she inhaled the intoxicating aroma of paper and leather around her. She loved opening her bookshop every morning, where antique classics, used and new volumes of various sizes filled the shelves around her. Framed paintings by local artists dotted the walls between the bookcases.  “Morning,” Baillie called to the previously owned hardbacks without the slightest apprehension of appearing insane. She talked to inanimate objects all the time—great audience, no heckling. Besides, I’m alone in here unless you count the cat, and you can’t count on that spoiled feline for anything. Where did he dash off to just now in such a hurry?  A thin volume of poems lay exposed on a shelf. “You don’t belong here,” Baillie said, sweeping it up to reshelve. She hesitated; the book cover felt cold in her hand, the worn leather chilling her fingers, sucking the warmth from her fingertips in seconds. She quickly shook her head to keep her thoughts from running amok. Of course the book was cold; in the Northwest, things always seemed cold.  “I swear someone helps themselves around here at night. The least they could do is put the books back where they belong when they’re done.” She turned and pushed a ceramic bookend aside and placed the wayward book next to the others as a quick chill shivered down her spine.  “Hey, Einstein, ol’ buddy.” Baillie grabbed an ornate feather duster from a brass umbrella stand nearby and took a few housekeeping swipes against the framed lithograph hanging on the wall. “Dang, I’m looking more like you every day.” She checked her reflection in the glass. “Tell me, did you see who moved Robert Burns’ book of poems last night? Maybe I need to borrow your glasses —going blind in my old age and missed putting it away after closing.”  Baillie turned, whistling the theme song from Fame, at the end of the aisle. She missed seeing the slow, deliberate movement as the same book silently shifted out from the shelf. The dark brown edition slid away from the other poetry books, hanging suspended for a moment, then lay back on the empty surface of the shelf. The ceramic bookend moved, closing the empty gap.  The front door of the shop opened with a tinkling of metal chimes. “It’s just me,” yelled a female voice as she came in.  “I’m in the north quarter, Sally. Would you turn on the computer?” Baillie responded from somewhere behind the walls of books. “Time to open up, I guess.”  “No problem, boss.” Sally dropped her purse under the counter.
Baillie knew her assistant’s routine by heart: She’d click the black toggle switch on the power strip with the toe of her shoe, sending juice to all the electronics at the same time. Baillie heard the calculator, printer and credit card unit each create its own hum as Sally pressed the power button.  “How are the hot flashes this morning?” Sally asked.  “Midlife under control, thank you very much young whiner.” Baillie dusted another shelf with a few fast swishes. “You can kick the personal heater on for a while.”  “Just a little damp for June this year, you know. Some of us don’t have the benefit of hormonal heaters,” she taunted.  “I heard that!” Baillie continued up and down the aisles, swishing the duster back and forth. Suddenly, a bitter cold swept around her, sending a blinding chill through her body. She gasped from the icy shock. Baillie couldn’t catch her breath as the splash of numbing cold flowed into her heart and out again, pounding inside her chest. The reddish blond hairs on the back of her exposed neck stood on end. Her teeth chattered against the chill, like Lucy Ricardo locked in the meat freezer.  “What the …?” She leaned against the shelving for support. “Whoa.” Baillie blinked rapidly and focused on her right hand, more specifically the beige metal shelf under her crimson-painted fingernails. The metal felt warm, warmer than her soul at the moment. Goose bumps traveled up her bare arms and under her short-sleeved blouse. Titles describing Scotland and its clans stood in military straight rows in front of her.  As quickly as it had struck, the air around her trembling body returned to normal temperatures. She took a shaky breath, mentally searching for some logical explanation for the bone-chilling cold. “Who turned the air conditioner on?” she whispered to herself with mock confidence. Looking around the cramped quarters of bookshelves as she moved away, the store seemed peaceful. She dropped the feather duster into a stand with a soft thud.

Character Interview with Cora Device from Returned and Before by author Keeley Smith.

Returned and Before Banner 450 x 169

Hi guys, today we are joined by Cora Device from Returned and Before by author Keeley Smith. I was told that the end of the interview would completely blow my mind, so let’s get on with it.

Character

Character Name: Cora Device

Character Bio: I’m 17 years old, and will always remain 17 years old. How much does that suck? I recently found out that I’m a witch.... and I’m still mastering my power but I can’t tell you too much about it. I shouldn’t be talking to a commoner about such things... I live with my mum, who isn’t actually my mum because my real mum was hung for being a witch, but my mum now is pretty cool. I also work with another witch called Tabitha and I have a coven with witches in it... sorry, this could get confusing and for your safety I won’t tell you too much more.

clip_image002

Describe yourself what is your worst and best quality?

I would say my best quality is my sarcasm but some would disagree, I really like to push it and annoy them. My worst quality... I don’t have one

What is the one thing you wish other people knew about you?

That I’m a witch and I can kick their ass. Unfortunately we can’t tell commoners, you are really very lucky that Tabitha has allowed me to tell you and talk with you today.

What is your biggest secret something no one knows about?

Other than being a witch...I guess I keep it a secret that I’m afraid of death. I like literally fear it. I guess because when I’m going to die it will probably be the result of severe pain I fear it more. Trouble seems to find me no matter where I am.

What are you most afraid of?

The Corenthio Coven. When they come, they will come and kill us. I fear them.

What do you want more than anything?

A peaceful life, one where I can see my real mum again and work at the witch shop without any trouble.

What is your relationship status?

Complicated.

How would you describe your sense of fashion?

I wear what is comfortable, I’m not wearing one of those robe things that Tabitha wears. They are hideous. I would love to dress like Ember. She has amazing fashion sense and always looks beautiful.

How much of a rebel are you?

Now that I have my power I find the rebellious side of me is more difficult to contain. Occasionally I like to let it out, for a bit of fun.

What do you considered to be your greatest achievement?

Going through the change. If I hadn’t gone through the change then I would be dead, for real. I was strong enough to go through death and come out the other side. I’m proud of that.

What is your idea of happiness?

Family. For me, family is so important. They make me happy. Without them I wouldn’t be.

What is your current state of mind?

Fear...regret...love. Those three feeling push to the front of my mind... I remember seeing Evander’s face before I fainted... Jack’s screaming my name.... I don’t remember much more.

What is your most treasured possession?

My element. It is something passed through my mother’s side of the family. Now that it has returned, I feel a connection to them.

Which living person do you, most despise?

Evander... he has done things I will kill him for...

What is your greatest regret?

That I didn’t save my mum when she was hung during the trials, I should have saved her.

What is the quality you most like in a man?

He has to be caring and protective. I love that a man would stand in front of a witch and stand for me. He will probably have to do it too.

Which living person do you most admire?

Tabitha. She is such a strong, single woman who has lived her life exactly how she wanted to. I admire that she has no regrets about anything.

If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?

I wouldn’t change anything about myself. The person I am today got me through some tough times, and that person will probably get me through many more.

Thanks for doing this interview but I think Tabitha may do something with your memory...sorry about that...

Huh? I….  Where the hell am I?

I've always loved reading, it is a common known fact that I pretty much demolish a book a day. Expensive hobby, but a great one! I've dabbled with writing since the day I could actually write. So, it was only fitting that I had my first book published when I was 15.

If I'm not writing you would generally find me reading, creating jewellery, trawling social networking sites and listening to music. I will pretty much listen to any kind of music but I have two favourites, country music which has been with me since I was a little toddler and I also love to listen to movie scores, especially when I'm writing!

I currently live in Yorkshire with my husband.
