Up and coming novelist sensation, McKayla never could have imagined that the medieval Scottish Highlands she wrote about were anything more than pure historical fiction. But little did she know that her Broun ancestry would prove an irresistible pull for one very remarkable highlander.
Colin MacLomain, skilled assassin and fierce warrior, is ready to make right his jaded past. Newly seated as chieftain, he's determined to win over his clan and one true love. But when she's pulled back in time will McKayla, his unknowing best friend, be able to see past his shaded history to the man he's determined to become?
Find out in Mark of the Highlander.
Coming soon- Vow of the Highlander (Book 2) and Wrath of the Highlander (Book 3)
Though they stood a good foot apart they might as well have been entwined with all the attraction crackling between them. He arched a brow and though he didn’t move toward her, his words certainly yanked her back against him. “More muscles. Far more strength. A tireless perseverance that I promise will make you weep.”
“Tireless,” she whispered.
“Perseverance,” he promised. “Determination.”
She licked her lips and tried to look away. Impossible. He looked so bloody good standing there in a plaid with the mountains cheering him on and the highland wind working fully to his advantage.
“You have no idea how hard it was for me to transform my feelings into something platonic. But I did. This. You.” She made a loose gesture in his direction. “Reignites old wounds.”
Colin nodded and instead of continuing to undress her with his practiced eyes he grabbed her hand and pulled her towards him.
“So let’s start over, Kay, sorry, McKayla.” He squeezed her hand. “I promise not to call you that until I earn back your trust. I dinnae deserve that level of closeness. Not yet. But I promise you one day I will. I want to earn back not only what I lost when I ended our relationship but what I lost because of all the lies. While I beg for my clan’s forgiveness, allow me to ask for yours as well, a thousand times over.”
A small shiver rippled through her. Did he really crave her forgiveness as much if not more than those who raised him? His very family? It was hard not to be humbled because she knew he was being truthful. She wasn’t being naïve, not this time. He meant it. Regardless, he wasn’t getting off that easy. “Let’s work at rebuilding the friendship and not worry so much about the relationship, okay?”
Colin nodded and led her into the forest. “Seems like a good start.”
That sounded like he intended the friendship to be a mere formality and for them to pick up where they left off. If he thought she was jumping back into a relationship, he was in for a rude awakening. “Friends, Colin. That’s all I want right now.”
“Aye,” he agreed. “Friends. Once earned.”
Again, something about the way he said it made her think he was a lot more arrogant than he thought he was.
Character Name: Colin MacLomain
Son of Iain and Arianna, Colin MacLomain was born in Cowal, Scotland in our Lord’s year, 1226. Raised as a warrior, he was conditioned to become chieftain. Defiant, rebellious, he abandoned his duties for three years to give service as a skilled assassin to an ancient brotherhood. Eventually he returned to the MacLomains to seek forgiveness and take his rightful position within the clan.
Describe yourself what is your worst and best quality?
What is my worst quality? I have no doubt that most would say it was once a restless spirit. But those days are now behind me. I can only hope my best quality is the ability to rule my clan well.
What is the one thing you wish other people knew about you?
That though I have been welcomed back into my clan, there will always be a part of me that strives harder to please than any former laird. I’ll always owe the MacLomain’s a larger debt than most.
What is your biggest secret something no one knows about?
Ah, now if I gave that away ‘twould turn to rumor and make its way to the enemy.
What are you most afraid of?
Harm befalling my clan or McKayla.
What do you want more than anything?
To see my sister Torra home safely and our stout enemies, Kier Hamilton and Colin MacLeod destroyed. Bloody blackguards.
What is your relationship status?
Married to the lass I’ve loved since the moment I laid eyes on her. ‘Twas no easy task winning her heart after all the lies told.
How would you describe your sense of fashion?
I favor my tartan, boots and claymore.
How much of a rebel are you?
‘Tis safe to say I was an extreme rebel until I came to my good senses.
What do you considered to be your greatest achievement?
Returning to my clan.
What is your idea of happiness?
Loving my lass.
What is your current state of mind?
Anxious as my brother and cousin travel north to seek out Torra. ‘Twill take them into the heart of the Hamilton clan.
What is your most treasured possession?
‘Tis not my most treasured possession but McKayla’s that I find most valuable. ‘Tis a ring that ties everything together.
What is your most marked characteristic?
I believe most would say patience.
What is it that you, most dislike?
Dishonorable, traitorous people.
Which living person do you, most despise?
Above all, my enemy Kier Hamilton.
What is your greatest regret?
That I wasnae honest with McKayla from the beginning.
What is the quality you most like in a man?
What is the quality you most like in a woman?
Who is your favorite hero in fiction?
I dinnae read much so ‘tis hard to say.
Which living person do you most admire?
My Da. When chieftain he strengthened the MacLomain clan admirably.
If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?
Nothing. A man must find contentment in who he is.
What is your motto?
‘Tis the MacLomain motto, "Ne parkas nec spemas." "Neither spare nor dispose."
Once again thank you for the interview.
Many thanks for having me, lass.
