It is the summer of 2012. The sky is blue, the ocean is crisp, and six young women are missing, including Madison Porter.
At the disappearance of her best friend, Amber Swanson falls into a spiral of destruction. She smokes, drinks and gets caught stealing. Her parents don't know what to do with her, so she is sent to live with her half-sister, Rebecca, in Virginia.
Ethan Hunter lives by the saying ‘blood is thicker than water’; even when his mother up and left him. At sixteen, he’s torn between holding on to the only family he has left and forging his own path for the future. He secretly plans his escape from his small, southern town.
The two lives collide and, as Amber puts the pieces of her best friend’s disappearance together, she and Ethan are thrown into a whirlwind of secrets, deceit, and murder.
“Thanks,” I muttered, forgetting for a moment that I didn’t like him. “Why are you screaming at me?”
“Because you were screaming yourself,” Rebecca said. “You must have fallen asleep and you started crying out.” I sat up straighter. Not this again I thought. The doctor said the pills would take care of it.
“How bad?” I asked. “What did I say?”
“I couldn't understand you,” Rebecca admitted. “But it sounded pretty bad. Is everything okay?”
“It's fine,” I said sharply. There was no way that I was going to tell Rebecca about the dream. “I'm fine.”
“There's no reason to be so angry Amber,” Jacob said. “Your sister is just trying to help.”
“I said I'm fine,” I snapped. “She's not trying to help as much as trying to get on our father's good side. She was always the goody two shoes...daddy's little princess. If her perfect reputation wasn’t at stake, she wouldn’t give a damn about me.”
Describe yourself what is your worst and best quality?
My best quality is also my worst quality. I'm what they call rough around the edges. I don't like to take crap from anyone. I say what I feel and think and I don't care what other people think. They aren't important really. Not to me.
What is the one thing you wish other people knew about you?
Deep down, I have abandonment issues. My father left and my mother...well I love her but she's a little to herself. I feel like ablone iceburg in an empty sea. I want someone to stick around just for a little bit.
What is your biggest secret something no one knows about?
I hate actually being in front of a camera.
What are you most afraid of?
Being alone and not having anyone who has my back. I had a close friend but I'm not sure how close she really was. She was kind of a back stabber to be honest.
What do you want more than anything?
Stability. Not to be schlepped around back and forth between parents and family that don't seem like they want me. I want to be wanted
What is your relationship status?
Its complicated. I had a guy who I could have said I was in love with...but it didn't exactly work out...
How would you describe your sense of fashion?
I'll wear anything and everything. I like short skimpy clothes but baggy sweats aren't bad either. I like to shop at thrift stores because they have awesome clothes that are so out of date they're becoming trendy again.
How much of a rebel are you?
I lost my leg after getting drunk one night at a party..you tell me how much of a rebel I am.
What do you considered to be your greatest achievement?
Graduating high school. I wasn't exactly the best student and kind of ran with a bad crowd.
What is your idea of happiness?
Doing your own thing no matter what people say. Marching to the beat of your own drum.
What is your current state of mind?
Regretful. I regret that I let things go on for so long without realizing it. I feel pretty stupid.
What is your most treasured possession?
My camera. I don't go anywhere without it.
What is your most marked characteristic?
My wooden leg. Its carved up and everything.
What is it that you, most dislike?
Stupid people. Ones who don't think for themselves..or worse, think that their opinion is the best and only one important enough to know.
Which living person do you, most despise?
My ex-whatever he was. I'm glad he's gone... He's nothing but trouble.
What is your greatest regret?
Not realizing what my friend was up to before it was too late.
What is the quality you most like in a man?
Knowing when to keep his mouth shut and his nose out of my business.
What is the quality you most like in a woman?
I don't. I think they're snotty, catty and my life is a hell of a lot better off without them.
Who is your favorite hero in fiction?
The dude from Divergent. Who doesn't like a man who knows how yo handle a weapon.
Which living person do you most admire?
If you tell her I'll deny it, but my sister. It took guts for her to take me in.
If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?
I would try to be more agreeable. I have this nasty habit of being argumentative.
What is your motto?
You have one life...make it count.
