Book Description:

This isn’t the afterlife she expected...

Jen MacLellan can’t get the hang of being a reaper. She’s been separated from Jack, the man she loves, and is stuck with an annoying telepathic link to her ill-tempered mentor, Sam. Now Death is breathing down her neck, promising to remove that annoying link if she gives him what he wants. But when reapers begin to disappear back on earth, leaving behind walking, talking dead people, Jen and Sam are thrust into a dangerous mission to recapture the souls, and a passionate physical relationship that complicates everything.

Jack Norris has no memory prior to waking up on the half-demon Nulcifer’s couch six months earlier. As he begins to investigate his past, he discovers a string of past lives tied together by a beautiful, mysterious brunette. Who is she? And why does finding her seem like a life or death proposition?

When Sam falls victim to fate during a routine visit to earth, Jen’s devastated. Desperate to get him back, she runs smack into the man she never thought she’d see again—Jack. She tries to keep her distance, but there’s no time to be awkward if they want to save Sam. When sinister plots are revealed, and betrayals threaten everything, she’s forced to make some tough choices—and learns that life is just as difficult when you’re dead.

excerpt

Sam wasn’t kidding when he said I had no idea what I was getting into. And now, as I stared Death in the face—literally—from an uncomfortable black leather executive chair, it occurred to me for the first time that I was in way over my head. Between the pinstriped suit and dark, slicked-back hair, he resembled a character from The Godfather more than a deity who ruled over the dead and dying. Death was one scary motherfucker. And he was smiling.

“Care for a drink, Jennifer?”

I shook my head, but he rose anyway, retrieved two glasses from the cabinet behind him, and filled both with amber-colored liquid. “Relax, I’m not going to bite.”

That wasn’t what I was worried about.

“Now, how long have you been with us? About six earth months?”

I cleared my throat. “Ah yes. About that long.”

“I find it intriguing,” he said. “You have been telepathically linked to one of my reapers this entire time, yet you really demonstrate no capability when it comes to this job. One would think that would give you an edge, hmm?”

Ouch.

“You’d think,” I laughed. OK, I sucked at it. It was only recently I’d been allowed to travel back to earth to help retrieve souls. Sam did most of the work, while I trailed behind, like one of those ankle-biting little purse dogs. What I wanted to know was why he’d insisted I do the job in the first place. I’d never asked to be a reaper. It wasn’t like I wanted this.

“The occupation listed from your most recent incarnation on earth was a mortician, was it not? So you should be accustomed to working with the deceased and the sensitivities that go along with it.”

“These two jobs are absolutely nothing alike.” Shit. I’d reacted again, lost my cool because of something he said. Now that my brain had caught up with my mouth, the fire snuffed out and with it went my nerve. I needed to learn to bite my tongue. Considering the habit crossed over with me from my last life, maybe that was wishful thinking. “Well, I mean, because when I was a mortician, those people didn’t talk back to me.”

Death studied me. “No, I don’t imagine they did.” He scrunched his lips up, his brow furrowed—the only hint of emotion I’d seen from him—but it quickly faded. “What exactly is it that’s holding you back or hanging you up? I’m just trying to understand here.”

“Well, I guess some of it is that I feel bad for them. I want to make things easier, but Sam’s all about scaring them and intimidating and manipulating them. It doesn’t seem right. I mean, we’re their first point of contact with the afterlife; why does it have to be frightening?” I was doing it again. OK, I needed to breathe. “I just… I see the fear in their faces, and it tears at me. It doesn’t feel right. It’s not me.”

“Fear makes them more pliable. Which in turn, makes your job easier when it’s time to collect.”

“But I don’t…”

He held up a hand. “I don’t like excuses, Jennifer. You may not agree with all of the methods you have been taught, but you still need to learn them and be able to utilize all of them. Years down the line, when you actually have some experience, perhaps then you can develop your own strategies. For now, as a rookie in the division without a single reaping under your belt, you are obligated to follow the instruction of your mentor. Do you understand?”

I nodded.

“I also hear that you’ve been visiting the civil records bureau every day, searching for the whereabouts of a human soul that you arrived with.”

I twisted the glass between my fingers. Jack and I had been separated soon after our arrival, and I hadn’t seen him since. We’d been a couple on earth, but since arriving in purgatory he’d all but vanished. “I had no idea that was against the rules.”

“I suppose it isn’t, technically. Though I do wonder if some might construe it as an abuse of power. Your position as a reaper gives you access to a wealth of information beyond what the general public can see, but it is meant for research and job purposes. Not personal business.”

“I understand.”

Did this guy even blink? He drummed his fingers on the glossy black surface of his desk as he watched me. I braced myself for the inevitable punishment.

“Jennifer, I have a proposition for you.”

I squirmed in my seat. Was I in trouble or what?

“Sammael is one of my oldest reapers, and he’s very dear to me, but I fear he may be up to something. Something illegal or nefarious in nature. I’ve overlooked a great deal with him in the past, but it’s getting to the point where I won’t be able to do that anymore. I’ve no idea what he’s up to. I want you to find out.”

“Excuse me?”

Death leaned forward so that his elbows rested on the desk. “Or have you already learned things? Come now, you must be close. A telepathic bond like this is quite intimate. Surely he’s shown you something.”

Intimate? More like a pain in the ass. Like having a voice in your head, intruding when you least welcomed it, and always listening. “Um…no. Not really.”

“Might I remind you, that he’s unable to hear you while you’re within the walls of this office?”

I paused. “Sam is very guarded with his thoughts. Most of the time I don’t hear anything, well, other than what he wants me to hear.”

“As I expected he would be.” He sipped his drink. “Do I sense some hesitation on your part? You once said you loathed being attached to him. That his thoughts invading your head were like the worst kind of infestation. What happened to that fiery little bitch who marched in my office and demanded to have this bond severed?” His smile returned. “One would think you’d do everything you could to get away from that. Unless you’ve changed your mind.”

I sank back into the chair, cringing at the memory. One of the many times Sam had pushed my buttons a little too far. I’d gone to Death’s office without even thinking about it—a knee-jerk type reaction.

“I tell you what. You find out what he’s up to, and I will personally make sure that link is removed. Then we can decide whether or not you will continue working for me, or perhaps whether schooling or a different apprenticeship would be more beneficial. At least until your contract with me is completed. How does that sound?”

“Well…” I frowned, considering it. Did I want Sam out of my head? Hell yeah. But I didn’t want to have to rat him out to do it. As far as I was concerned, whatever he did was his own business and the less I knew, the better. Besides, how would I pull something like this off? He plucked thoughts from my head when I least expected it, even when I thought I was being clever and concealing them. I couldn’t imagine trying to hide a secret of this magnitude. “I don’t know.”

“Could it be you have changed your mind about him?”

“No. Absolutely not. It’s just, I have no idea how I’d keep this from him. I mean, he’d know right away. Even if I manage to hide the thought, he’ll know I’m hiding something, and he won’t let up until he finds out what. It wouldn’t work.”

Death looked thoughtful. “Have you tried any of the masking techniques I taught you?”

“Well, yeah, but they only work if I concentrate.” And who the hell could concentrate all hours? I was already getting paranoid. I needed to tuck this little piece of knowledge somewhere deep inside and hope that Sam wouldn’t feel the need to pry. Yeah right. I might as well have had a live bomb lodged in my skull.

“I see.” Death swirled the liquid in his glass before taking a healthy gulp. “Be that as it may, you are now a reaper, even if by title only.”

At least he was honest.

“And with that job comes great responsibility. I had such high hopes for you when you first joined us—a bright, intelligent, level-headed woman, someone who could perhaps reel Sammael in before he strayed too far from my reach. But even on a base level, your grasp of the job is subpar at best. I’ve always handpicked the finest individuals. Because of your unique circumstances I believed I’d found a gem. Unfortunately, the honeymoon is over.”

This was new territory for me. I’d never been called incompetent before. During my last life on earth I’d been an honor student in school, then I’d gotten a job I loved and was good at.

“I need results, Jennifer. You must complete a reaping during your next assignment. I need something to prove that first instinct wasn’t wrong, because I”—he sipped his drink again, his gaze never leaving mine—“hate being wrong.”

Death placed his glass on the desk.

“Do I make myself clear?”

I offered a quick, jittery nod and gripped the armrests of the chair. Fuck, how was I going to keep this from Sam?

“Good.” Oh God, he was smiling again. He placed both tips of his forefingers together in an inverted V in front of his nose. “You may leave.”

  authorinterview

Did you always wanted to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?

I wouldn’t say I aspired to be a writer when I was little, though I did always enjoy writing stories and poetry. It wasn’t until I was out of college and home with my first child that I seriously considered trying to become a published author.

When did you first consider yourself a “writer”?

Probably about the same time I got it in my head that I was actually serious about doing it, and that it was taking up a considerable amount of time and energy.

How long did it take to get your first book published?

It took roughly six months to a year of querying Living Dead Girl before it was accepted for publication, and from there, a little less than a year until it was published.

Do you do another job except for writing and can you tell us more about it?

I work for the US Postal Service.

What is the name of your latest book, and if you had to summarize it in less than 20 words what would you say?

Reaper Madness is the title of my most recent full-length novel release. Oh boy, only 20 words? I’m terrible at this. How about something like this: “Two lovers, separated after death, struggle to navigate the afterlife and discover secrets about themselves along the way.”

Who is your publisher? Or do you self-publish?

I have two books and an anthology short story published by a small press called Etopia Press, as well as a self published short in the Love Least Expected anthology.

How long does it usually take you to write a book, from the original idea to finishing writing it?

I can do it in just a few months, but it really depends on how much I have on my plate and how well the words are flowing.

What can we expect from you in the future?  ie More books of the same genre? Books of a different genre?

I will have another 2-3 books with the Living Dead World series, so more of the same genre. I’ve also got a contemporary romance in the works.

What genre would you place your books into?

I guess my work would best fit into the urban fantasy/ paranormal genre. My stories usually have a strong romantic subplot, but they don’t really follow a romance formula...and of course there’s a the paranormal element mixed in.

What made you decide to write that genre of book?

I think I’ve always gravitated toward fantasy, paranormal and horror in books and films, so the interest is naturally there. I really enjoy taking these elements and findings ways to weave them into real life situations, with realistic-type characters.

Do you have a favorite character from your books? And why are they your favorite?

That’s a tough call. I really love Sam, the reaper from Living Dead Girl and Reaper Madness. He’s got this sarcastic, dry, ironic sense of humor and he’s kind of a jerk--but he’s also caring, and complex in his own way. He’s been fun to write, especially dialogue-wise.

Do you choose a title first, or write the book then choose the title?

I usually start writing, then choose the title.

How do you come up with characters names and place names in your books?

For character names, I usually just stick to basic, regular names and try not to go too crazy with unusual ones. Most of the time I come up with the character’s names before I start writing, when I’m thinking about the story and who these people are. Occasionally I’ll change my mind while writing and rename someone, but it’s not something I waste a lot of time worrying about. With places, I tend to stick to real cities/states/towns. If it’s a fantasy based world (or the afterlife in my series), I tend to draw inspiration from various mythologies or religions for place names.

Do you decide on character traits (ie shy, quiet, tomboy girl) before writing the whole book or as you go along?

I don’t think in terms of specific traits and trying to mold characters to them. It’s more a constant process of asking who is this person and how would they react in this situation? Like really getting to know someone and stepping inside their head. It’s really hard to explain that process, because I’m really organic in how I create characters--I don’t sit down and plot and plan and outline beforehand. I just have an idea in my head and a direction/goal for the story and work out along the way which is the best way to get there.

Are there any hidden messages or morals contained in your books? (Morals as in like Aesops Fables type of "The moral of this story is..")

If there are, they weren’t intentional, haha!

Which format of book do you prefer, eBook, hardback, or paperback?

It’s starting to be e-book more and more because of the convenience and portability. Though I do like the feel of a softcover book.

excerpt

Audray loved being the first-ever woman Director of the Underworld, but she preferred the title “Queen” even better. Jonas had begun calling her that and it became part of her persona almost immediately.

Maybe it is the way Jonas whispers it to me just before he takes me.

That word was something she would never tire of hearing, just like the sounds her paramour made as he pleasured her to distraction and beyond. And the best thing of all was that he did it out of love, not obligation. His need to please her was equal to her need to be ravished over and over again.

And worshiped as only a queen should be.

Jonas was still wearing his black leather vest, but was naked everywhere else that counted, sleeping like a baby. She tucked her back into the warmth of his chest, feeling tiny against him, and reveled at how safe and protected she felt. She’d never had such a big man, big everywhere, but especially big in the way his soul screamed for her. It took a lot to distract her from all the pleasures in the Underworld, but being in bed with Jonas outshone them all.

When they’d gotten back to her home in the human world, he’d barely caught the bike when she jumped off. He saved it, of course, cursing softly, before it could tip and fall into her blood red Maserati. Even hearing him curse gave her chills.

All afternoon she had been touching him as they flew past rows of vineyards and redwood trees on their way home, her breasts pressed against the back of his thick torso. Her cheek rested in the place she smelled his maleness the strongest: at the back of his neck, just under his hairline. She watched the light brown tendrils of his shoulder length hair dusted with gray, catch fire in the late afternoon sun, coaxing her to reach down and squeeze his package, making him swerve the bike. But he was laughing, and she felt they didn’t have a care in the whole world.

She had thought she would enjoy the powerful Directorship more. Jonas had been an unexpected distraction. Ever since their explosive first meeting, Audray felt her whole world had changed.

authorinterview

Did you always wanted to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?

I always enjoyed writing. I wanted to be successful, and my own boss. I’m not a good employee. So being a business owner has always worked for me.

When did you first consider yourself a “writer”?

I still have a copy of my first check from Amazon, $16.20. And that was for 2 months, because the previous one I hadn’t earned $10. But seeing that little check and knowing inside I still loved to write after all the work it took to earn that $16.20 made me realize I was truly a writer.

How long did it take to get your first book published?

I did the agent, 2-3 year shopping for agent and publisher thing. That model doesn’t work for me. I don’t handle that amount and kind of rejection well, “Go knock yourself out for 4-5 months and then we’ll tell you if it was worth it.”  Not. For. Me.

So, I’m Indie and I can publish when I have something I feel is worthy to publish.

Do you do another job except for writing and can you tell us more about it?

Full time writer. Happy to say, I can live off what I earn selling my books.

What is the name of your latest book, and if you had to summarize it in less than 20 words what would you say?

Bad girl gets knocked up, except she’s supposed to be running the Underworld and people want to kill her for it.

How long does it usually take you to write a book, from the original idea to finishing writing it?

Generally, 2 months writing, one month polish and edits. The ideas I develop for the next book while I’m writing the current book. I don’t take notes! I figure if I can’t remember my ideas, my readers won’t remember my book, so I usually start the next book in my head, since I write series. When I actually sit down to write that book is dependent on my business plan and what I need to get out there to remain discoverable. I switch genres too, partly for my own enjoyment, partly to keep my readers on their toes and broaden the base.

What can we expect from you in the future?  ie More books of the same genre? Books of a different genre?

I write Romantic Suspense too, Navy SEAL romances, so I have 2 genres, the paranormal (The Guardians, and Golden Vampires of Tuscany) and romantic suspense.

What genre would you place your books into?

This one, paranormal, although it takes place during contemporary times. I’ve seen some paranormal authors lately call themselves contemporary authors. Not sure that’s really wise to mislead readers. I mean, a book is a book, whether it’s an eReader or hardback. But a paranormal romance is not a contemporary romance any way you slice it.

What made you decide to write that genre of book?

For the series, I always thought it would be fun to write about a guardian angel who falls in love with her human charge. In this book, my heroine has been a very bad girl in previous books. So the genre (The Guardians) came first, and then the characters gave me the series and the stories.

Do you have a favorite character from your books? And why are they your favorite?

It’s hard to say. If I’m not in love (ready to leave my husband kind of lust/love) with the hero, I can’t write the book. If I’m jealous of the heroine, I can write the book. I find it impossible to have a favorite because I’m a mess when writing them. I’m in their world.

How long have you been writing?, and who or what inspired you to write?

I began writing in 2008 after our house burned down and virtually everything about or lifestyle changed. Turned out to be the best thing in the world for me. Left alone in a 600 sf apartment (my husband had to stay at our property in a trailer to mind the animals), I could read, write and do anything 24/7, which was a way new thing for me, since I’d raised 4 children. The rest just came as I gave myself the chance to follow that lead. I think writers are born curious, but their opportunities force them to investigate and then share that process.

Do you have a certain routine you have for writing? ie You listen to music, sit in a certain chair?

Love listening to music when I write, or have to have total peace and quiet. I listen to only instrumental music as the words compete with the words I’m putting down on the page. I like music that stirs the emotions so I can pour it on (music does some of the heavy lifting, I guess you could say). I will sometimes play one track all day because it matches the pacing of the story.

Great example of this is the song “Forever In My Dreams” by Two Steps From Hell. I have a scene in SEAL’s Promise where the heroine comes home, expecting to break up with her SEAL boyfriend, and it will be painful because he was the best friend of her husband when he was killed overseas. My hero has decorated her baby’s room because he just has to do something. He can’t just stand by and watch her leave. She walks into the room and sees the inscription he’s written on the wall and realizes he is everything she’s ever wanted. I love that song and I feel that scene whenever I listen to it. Makes me cry every time.

Do you read all the reviews of your book/books?

No. But then I don’t listen much to the news or read the newspaper. I prefer another reality, another set of stories, another set of opinions. Okay, maybe the 5 stars I read! LOL. I’m not that humble!

Do you choose a title first, or write the book then choose the title?

I usually come up with the title before I write the book. I have never changed it during. Because I write series, I’m looking for a pattern, either by subject or specific word, for the title, so the reader will remember what that book was about.

How do you come up with characters names and place names in your books?

I live in wine country, Sonoma County, California. Lots of my stories take place here. The characters’ names are more reflective of where they grew up. I like unusual names, but words that sound good in the voice of my narrator (I hear his voice 24/7 when I write now).

Do you decide on character traits (ie shy, quiet, tomboy girl) before writing the whole book or as you go along?

I know the big ones before I write. I deliciously discover the little ones while I write. And of course at the end, the character falls in love with someone they didn’t think they could really love, and becomes someone different as a result of that. Love changes my characters, as it should in a good love story!

Are there any hidden messages or morals contained in your books? (Morals as in like Aesops Fables type of "The moral of this story is..")

Good is always stronger than evil.
True Love Heals In The Gardens Of The Heart.
Heaven isn’t 100% perfect by design. The Underworld isn’t 100% evil by accident.

Which format of book do you prefer, eBook, hardback, or paperback?

I read 3X faster on my Kindle.

Do you think books transfer to movies well? Which is you favorite/worst book to movie transfer?

Yes. And all my books should be movies! I see them as movies when I write them. I see all the detail, and then choose what I want to put on the page. (Sometimes my editor says to me, “when did we see that?” and I have to tell her that I saw it, just forget to put it down! Lol)

The angel Patrick Swayze movie they ruined. The book was different. But I once talked to a filmmaker who said he only directed films that were tragedies. HEAs didn’t work much in film (I disagree). But when I see a movie like that one, I was screaming, “No!!! You ruined a perfectly good Happily Ever After.”

Your favorite food is?

Chocolate. Really good BBQ. Messy king crab with lots of butter. Biscuits. Fresh tomato soup from my garden.

Your favorite singer/group is?

Secret Garden and Two Steps (Thomas Bergensen) for instrumental. Moriconi for soundtracks. Keith Urban (Making Memories of Us) for working In the garden or driving around or getting into trouble. Same with Brandy Clarke (Stipes is my fave).

Your favorite color is?

Bright heartthrob red.

Your favorite Author is?

Probably Diana Gabaldon, because I don’t think I could ever get there…Everyone else is a goal to be achieved. If you understand that, you understand me.

Sharon’s NYT and USA Today bestselling novels are almost-erotic Navy SEAL stories of the SEAL Brotherhood. Her characters follow a spicy road to redemption through passion and true love. This series continues with book 8, SEAL's Promise, which will release November 11, 2014. All of her SEAL Brotherhood Series are available in audio book. She has maintained an Amazon top 100 author status in Romantic Suspense for since the end of 2012.

Her Golden Vampires of Tuscany are not like any vamps you’ve read before, since they don’t have to go to ground, and can walk around in the full light of the sun. Honeymoon Bite, Book 1 of the Golden Vampires of Tuscany Series, has earned the Amazon designation of #1 Gothic Romance. It and Book 2 in the series, Mortal Bite are both available on audio as well.

Her Guardian Angels struggle with the human charges they are sent to save, often escaping their vanilla world of Heaven for the brief human one. You won’t find any of these beings in any Sunday school class.

Sharon lives in Sonoma County, California, with her husband and two Dobermans. A lifelong organic gardener, when she’s not writing, she’s getting verra verra dirty in the mud, or wandering Farmer’s Markets looking for new Heirloom varieties of vegetables and flowers.

BOOK SYNOPSIS

For a moment, Jamie held the world, even though it wasn’t his to hold… Jamie has spent his entire life playing the good twin. Now, he’s the one standing out after signing with Guillotine Records. Two years of being on his own in California hasn’t lessened his desire for the man who made it happen. Too bad that man belongs to one of Jamie’s oldest friends.
Fate is about to hand him an unexpected chance. After losing everything, Hawke needs a break from reality. Too many lies and heartaches have left him with nothing except nightmares he can’t escape. Seeing Jamie again reminds him of a different time—one where Jamie made him feel a spark of something pure.
Can Jamie undo the years of damage caused by his so-called friend? In the face of everything Maddox has done to Hawke, Jamie can’t let this chance pass him by. No friendship in the world is strong enough to overlook the pain Maddox has caused. Jamie can’t think of a thing he’d rather do than pick up the pieces of Hawke’s life, but will Hawke let him?
Sometimes the most beautiful relationships spring from the most broken places.

EXCERPT

Hawke hugged him. Jamie was too surprised to react right away. When he did, some sort of strange dumbassery rose to the surface. “Awww, you let me inside your bubble. I’m going to breathe up all the good air.”
Hawke snorted. “Shut up.” He tensed as if he meant to pull away. Jamie closed his arms around him, keeping him in place.
“I’m being serious.” He turned his head, burying his nose against Hawke’s neck, and inhaling loudly. “You’re going to suffocate.” A low laugh escaped Hawke, feeding Jamie’s ridiculousness. He didn’t try pulling away again. Jamie’s heart swelled. He pressed his mouth to Hawke’s throat, breathing heavily. “I’m breathing on you too. You’re going to end up with some dreaded disease.”
Hawke’s hands found his waist. “You’re definitely killing me.” Jamie didn’t miss the husky note to his voice. The pads of Hawke’s thumbs brushed his sides—skin on skin. Jamie’s body reacted the same as Hawke going down on him. He wouldn’t last long if the man ever willingly touched him in such a way. Jamie untangled himself before he could embarrass himself.

Book Description:

Tragedy strikes the Roseburg family and leaves Mike struggling to help his wife, Mia. After losing their only child in an accident, Mia is far from emotionally distraught…instead, she continues on like their son is still alive.

Four months passed since the accident…

Mike begins to work with a psychiatrist to help his wife with her delusions when a darkness begins to haunt them. As this dark presence becomes violent, making itself known, Mike wonders if the illusion of their child that his wife is seeing is something far more demonic.

With the dark force looming over them, Mike is left questioning his own sanity as he tries to unravel what is real and what is not.

Soon he realizes…

Something is dreadfully wrong.

excerpt

The force of the impact with the truck thrust the Jeep forward, throwing Mia deep into her seat as they went nose first into a ditch. What was left of the back of the jeep rolled up over the front. It continued to flip over several times before seeming to levitate in the air after rolling off the embankment. It felt like an eternity, the world moving in slow motion, before it smashed against the icy cold river sending shards of glass and ice throughout the vehicle. As it slowly began to sink Mia automatically reached down to unbuckle herself. After struggling to free herself from the seat belt she reached back for her son.

Her long, dark hair floated through the thickness of the icy water and streams of blood swam around her face. As she turned around everything became hazy and the darkness fought to take away her control. A panic began to set in as her heart raced. She needed to get back to Eli, to unbuckle him…she needed to save her son.

Being a mother she couldn’t care less if she was hurt, she just needed to save her son. Like a tiger protecting her young, it was a mother’s first priority.

As she tried to move into the back seat she reached out to Eli again.

He gently placed his outstretched hand into hers. His eyes, so soft and gentle, stared into his mother’s, whose were full of pain and fear for him. He smiled his sweet innocent smile as if telling her that things were going to be okay.

It was the end of February, a time the weather was supposed to be warming up as it was readying for spring. Supposed to…but of course it wasn’t.

Mia had been trying to avoid what happened. Just moments ago she was talking to her husband on the phone through the Bluetooth she managed to con him into installing, stating that she was going to wait for the storm to pass.

“Hello,” Mikes groggy voice had echoed through the car.

“Hi, Daddy.” Eli’s enthusiasm rang throughout the vehicle. “Dad…Dad, I’m out of school, Dad. And it’s snowing!”

“Oh yeah, buddy,” Mike replied. “Well, I guess I will see you soon then.”

Mia had angled her rear view mirror down to look back at Eli. She placed her index finger in front of her mouth to shush him but smiled underneath it.

Eli puckered his lips out and grabbed them with one hand to keep himself from talking as he gave her a thumbs up.

“Yeah, it’s snowing like crazy.” Mia took her time as she drove. She was never a fan of the winter weather and only liked snow on Christmas Eve and

Christmas Day, any time before or after that she’d prefer it be seventy degrees and sunny. “We’re going to be late for dinner. I think I’m going to pull over when I can manage to even see anything so I don’t slide into a damn ditch.”

When Mia left to pick Eli up from preschool there were just a few flurries floating in the icy wind. Now it had come to near white out conditions, causing her to curse winter even more.

“All right, just take your time and watch out for the crazy people out there. And I came up with an awesome idea for big man’s birthday party. Turning the big five soon, eh, buddy.”

Mia looked in the mirror and saw Eli’s deep brown eyes light up. He hopped up and down in his booster seat with excitement. “Do I get a guitar,

Dad? Daddy, I want a guitar!”

“You’ll have to wait and see, buddy, but I better let you guys go so you can get home. Maybe this snow will be good enough to take you snowmobiling later.”

Mia rolled her eyes and shook her head in frustration. “See you when we get home.”

She was still upset with him over what had happened the night before. She could swear that sometimes it seemed like he’d rather be anywhere but where the man of the house should be at night…home. Gender roles were never really her thing, but to her it always seemed like the man did a better job of protecting the family from intruders.

“Stay safe,” Mike said before he hung up.

After Mike hung up Mia had slowed down even more, trying to find a place to pull over before she got anywhere near the upcoming bridge that crossed the river. She wanted to be out of the way of any oncoming traffic but with the snow falling as hard as it was, it was nearly impossible to see anything.

After a few more minutes of driving the snow let up ever so slightly, enough for her to spot a place where she could pull over. Slowing down to a near stop, she started to turn the wheel.

The distinctive sound of a big rig's horn snapped her attention to the rear view mirror, still angled for her to see Eli. She snapped her head to the right side mirror and saw a tractor trailer turned sideways, sliding towards her. Her heart raced as she pushed the gas pedal, trying to get out of the way as fast as she could. The wheels seemed to turn in pace and the air horn blared again, but was drowned out by the screeching of metal as it collided.

Everything went black.
