Angels and Arias

Book 1

Gracie Madison

Genre: New Adult Paranormal Romance

Publisher: Tika Lake Publishing LLC

Date of Publication: 1/21/2015

Number of pages: 325-350

Word Count: 84,000 Words

Cover Artist: Rebecca Berto

Book Description:

Madeline Noel fled war-torn Heaven to hide within the mortal world, but the blessing that could protect her from evil is the holy realm’s forbidden power.

As a talented soprano for the Eden Theatre Company, Madeline hides among prima donnas and tone-deaf flutists. Her perfect voice may entertain audiences, but a careless laugh may shatter glass, and her greatest scream can kill. To control her unrestrained voice, the angels forbid Madeline from embracing the emotions that strengthen her song. Anger. Fear.

Love.

The demon-hunter Damascus vows to defend Madeline from Hell’s relentless evil, but he cannot protect her from her own feelings. Though they deny their dangerous attraction, her guardian becomes her greatest temptation.

Surrendering to desire may awaken the gift suppressed within Madeline’s soul, and neither Heaven nor Hell will allow such absolute power to exist.

excerpt

She flicked the light to her bedroom and dropped her towel in the hamper.

“Magdala.”

Her hand merely muffled the screeched yelp. Madeline fell backward, smacking against the closet. She tripped and clattered into the hamper. Damascus apologized, but her gasp shattered the perfume container on her vanity.

Madeline yanked the towel from the laundry. The wet scrap of material wove over her body, and she clutched the fraying edges.

Damascus’s silence stole any sound she might have uttered.

His muscles bound, tight and tensed, more prepared for war than the glimpse of her bared skin. The gold in his eyes burned molten. Madeline shifted, her bare toes gripping the carpet to prevent her from toppling over once more.

She shivered. It wasn’t the wet hair that whispered the goose bumps along her spine. Damascus saw far more than the thin strip of cloth hid. His gaze warmed her curves and tickled the swell of her breasts. Her nipples hardened. She prayed he hadn’t noticed.

He did.

The memory of the soap in the shower tortured the twisting in her lower belly. For a single, blissful, blasphemous moment, she imagined it had been Damascus’s hand washing her.

She exhaled.

Damascus growled.

His every movement strengthened with need. The wild, uninhibited, dangerous desire would claim them both. Madeline clamored backward, the apology shrill and muffled by her hand.

She hadn’t needed to speak, drop the towel, or offer any secrets. The heat smoldering low escaped in a sigh. The soft puff promised more than she intended. She breathed an invitation.

A seduction.

And he answered.

Damascus shuddered. He blinked, hard, and rubbed his head.

“I apologize.” Damascus forced his words. “I… I didn’t mean to invade your privacy.”

Madeline tugged the towel lower over her thighs. “You didn’t know.”

“I should let you—”

“Don’t worry about it. Here.” She hobbled toward the robe lying over her bed.

“Let me—”

“I’ve got it.”

Damascus’s motions stiffened. He retrieved the robe as Madeline lunged for the fuzzy pink arm. Her toes banged against the bedpost, and the surge of pain toppled her into Damascus’s waiting arms.

He smelled of the Realm, of warmth and radiance, citrus and holy incense.

Fire.

The towel shifted, and his fingers brushed over her bare back. His calloused hands heated, as if he wielded his sword. The heat lashed her—a punishment seared within a delicious reward. The towel tumbled, and she pushed against him to hide what nearly exposed.

His embrace was everything as she imagined, the heat, the intensity of his grip, the fluttering within her stomach and her body upon his. His hands bound a supreme authority over her. He pressed her skin with possessive fingertips. He handled her as if she were delicate and precious.

The shock of it all drove her to silence.

He protected her, but he never held her.

Watched over her, but never touched her.

Saved her from demons, but never reassured her.

He never mourned with her when a Choir was killed.

Every moment hidden far from the Realm passed in painful isolation, and he was the lone simple comfort of home. The sweet, dangerous touch protected her more than his sword or his distant promises. The heat settled the dissonance capturing her mind.

The Realm forbid their touch. A hug cried sacrilege.

Madeline closed her eyes and rested her head on his shoulder.

character

Character Name: Madeline Noel

Character Bio:

I’m an angel hiding within the mortal world—currently I’m concealed as a human and I’m working as the supporting soprano for the Eden Theater Company’s production of The Magic Flute. I’m avoiding divas by day, and demons at night. I think I might prefer the demons…

Describe yourself what is your worst and best quality?

My best quality is my voice, but it’s also my worst. I entertain audiences and my theater coworkers, but, if I’m not careful, my slightest whisper could shatter glass, and my greatest scream could kill. It’s a lot of pressure on me and my friend’s eardrums.

What is the one thing you wish other people knew about you?

Probably…to cover their ears when I get angry.

What is your biggest secret something no one knows about?

I’m losing control of the emotions which fuel my voice…

What are you most afraid of?

Revealing my true feelings for Damascus, the demon-hunter assigned to protect me. Losing Damascus would also be a nightmare, but, should anyone find out about my feelings, I’d lose him anyway.

What do you want more than anything?

The freedom to explore the power of my voice so I might protect myself and the ones I love.

What is your relationship status?

It’s…very complicated, and the angelic realm wants nothing more than for my Facebook status to remain single.

How would you describe your sense of fashion?

The costume designers at the theater dress me. ;)

How much of a rebel are you?

Since the angelic realm is currently in a rebellion…I try to avoid that word as much as possible.

What do you considered to be your greatest achievement?

Developing a friendship with Natalie—a human, but the one person who knows nothing of my past or my true identity, someone who loves me for me.

What is your idea of happiness?

Returning home and singing for the one I love.

What is your current state of mind?

I have to remain calm at all times to control my voice, but I’m cracking a bit and letting myself feel fear and happiness…and love. It’s all very forbidden.

What is your most marked characteristic?

My voice

What is it that you, most dislike?

Tone-deaf flutists

Which living person do you, most despise?

Corinth, the betrayer angel responsible for terrorizing the angelic realm, nearly destroying the fragile truce between angels and demons, and pledging to murder me to further his own goals. But sometimes…the theater’s prima donna is a bit trying.

What is your greatest regret?

Never attempting to strengthen my voice to protect myself and my friends.

What is the quality you most like in a man?

The realm wouldn’t allow me to answer this question…

…a flaming sword and a burning hatred of demons is a plus though.

What is the quality you most like in a woman?

Bravery

Which living person do you most admire?

Natalie, the director’s assistant high-school runaway turned prophet. She escaped a hellish childhood only to face the wrath of demons, but she’s surviving…and running the opera’s production very well.

If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?

I’d be allowed to love Damascus.

What is your motto?

Think before you speak…or laugh…or whisper…or sing…or scream…

Excerpt

Would he take her job?
Owen looked back towards the person she had surreptitiously pointed out, a huge dark-haired man loitering in one of the many corners of the crowded club but not completely swathed in shadows.
His blood began a slow boil at the thought that the man had ambushed Cait just two hours ago, making her have to fight to escape and injuring her in the process. The shifter was exactly the sort of mark he had gone after countless times—a male who thought that females could be subjugated and were put on this planet for their pleasure, created to be at their beck and call.
Little more than a slave.
He narrowed his eyes on the male as the immense shifter looked at him, holding his steady gaze and showing him that he might have Cait running, but he wouldn’t get the same reaction out of him.
Owen had put down plenty of his kind.
This male would be just another misogynistic bastard to add to his tally.
He dragged his gaze back to Cait where she sat opposite him, all of her confidence gone, leaving behind a woman who looked smaller and vulnerable to him.
In need of his protection.
He had only just met her, but he didn’t like seeing her this way, the light disappeared from her eyes and all of the brightness gone from her face as she waited to hear what he would say.
“I’ll take it.” Owen offered his hand and she slipped hers into it, her palm soft against his and sending a warm thrill chasing up his arm.
He shook her hand and then released her, leaned down and swiped his black satchel from the floor. Cait’s blue eyes followed his every move and widened slightly when he removed his tablet device from his bag and flipped the cover open. He set his bag down on his lap, and the tablet on top of it, and tapped the icon that would start up the database he had created.
The basic program filled the bright screen and he tapped on the search function and selected cat shifters from the list of species. There were so many cat shifter species that he had given them their own category separate from other shifters.
While it loaded all of the shifters he had documented, Owen flagged Sherry down. If he was going to deal with jumping straight into another job, one that might be beyond his skill level, he was going to need another drink.
Sherry bounced along the length of the bar to him, her blonde ponytail swaying with each step.
“Hellfire?” she said with a smile and he grimaced and shook his head.
“Something a little less liable to kill me this time. Two vodkas, on ice. Make it the good stuff.”
Sherry nodded and left to make his drinks. The screen on his tablet changed, snagging his attention. He swiped up the screen, scrolling through all the cat shifters he had documented, pausing only long enough to pay Sherry when she returned. She set the drinks down, took his money, and disappeared along the bar.
Owen pushed one of the glasses across to Cait. Her eyes were glued to his tablet, the screen lighting her face as she leaned across, closer to him, her head at an angle.
“These are all shifters you’ve met?” She ran her gaze over the pictures he had managed to snap of the shifters in secret from a safe distance and hooked her long dark hair behind her ears, pulling it away from her face. “It says two thousand three hundred and twelve results.”
He nodded. “That’s how many cat shifters I’ve come across. Not all of them are alive now.”
She leaned away from him, a frown marring her brow. “You think he’s in there?”
Owen shrugged. “He sounds like the type who might have a rep. I might have come across him before. There’s something familiar about him.”
He swigged his vodka and altered the parameters of the search to male and height in the six-foot-three to six-foot-six range.
The results came back quicker this time, down to only eight hundred and twenty two.
Cait looked impressed and scanned the page as he scrolled. He was almost at the bottom of the list when she jammed her finger against an entry.
“That’s him.” Her touch brought the record up and she snatched her hand back and blinked at the screen.
Owen had the impression that she didn’t get out of Hell much. “Never seen a tablet before?”
“I have,” she said, a hint of indignation in her tone. “I just haven’t touched one. I wasn’t expecting it to do that.”
He smiled as she peered closer to the device, her gaze flitting around the screen.
“You’re certain this Marius fellow is him?” Owen waited for her to nod before going back to work.
“Marius,” she murmured, still staring at the photograph on the screen. “I think I remember someone shouting that at him once.”
He double-tapped the part of the entry where it had the male down as a panther shifter and corrected it. The notes on the sources of information mentioned that eyewitnesses in a Nepal village high in the mountains in snow leopard territory had described him as a black cat. Owen had presumed he was a black panther. He probably hadn’t even considered the male could be a hellcat.
“I don’t have much on him.” But what he did have was enough to ring some warning bells in his head.
The male followed similar patterns to other fae he had tracked, travelling from one prime location for rare species to another. Nepal. Brazil. Northern India. Siberia. All places with rare cat shifters.
Owen studied Cait as she stared at the tablet.
He had a feeling she might be in serious danger but he didn’t want to spook her by telling her that the male after her probably dealt in the black market. They were both hellcats. There was an equal chance that Cait was right and Marius wanted her as a mate.
Until he had investigated the male further and had more information on him, Owen would keep his suspicions to himself.
He closed the cover of his tablet device and put it back in his bag.
“I don’t go into things blind. I need more information. I think we should go somewhere quieter to discuss the job and so you can fill me in on everything you know… maybe away from your admirer.” Owen took his drink and smiled at her, raising the glass at the same time, hoping the male was still watching them.
If luck was with him, Marius wouldn’t know who he was and would think he was just another mortal in the bar flirting with Cait. A harmless male looking for a good time.
He instantly hardened in his black jeans, his body issuing a painful reminder that it wasn’t wholly a lie. He was looking for a good time with Cait. Her flirting had revved him up, filling his head with thoughts of finding a dark corner and making out with her.
Okay, making out was a little too innocent sounding for what he had in mind, but it had been a while since he had been as attracted to someone as he was to her. Heck, he wasn’t sure he had ever been this attracted to anyone. He had always kept his dalliances short and sweet, a periodic scratching of a biological itch, but something about Cait had him firing on all cylinders and thinking in terms longer than a single hot and heavy moment.
He was thinking in terms longer than multiple hot and heavy moments. Nights were involved. Many of them. As many as she would give him.
More than they might have together when working on her job.
He emptied his glass to kill that thought with the alcohol and set it back down on the bar.
“Where do you want to go?” She sipped her drink, a genuine smile playing on her lips and the fire back in her eyes. It sent a bolt of hot lust through him again and he grimaced and shifted on his seat, trying to get more comfortable as his jeans pinched his groin.
“My place.” It came out a little harder and more demanding, and definitely more hungry than he had intended.

Word Count: 74,414words

Book Description:

Normandy. 1067.

England has been brought to its knees by the invasion of William the Conqueror and his Norman troops.

Lady Catheryn, an Anglo-Saxon noblewoman, is taken against her will to Normandy after the invasion.

She arrives, a prisoner, at the castle of Lord Geffrei, a ruthless invader who hopes to gain a ransom for her.

Her husband Selwyn is dead, slain in the Conquest, and her daughter Annis has been left behind in England at the mercy of the invaders.

Catheryn is treated like an animal, and left in a cell until she begins to despair.

When Queen Matilda, William the Conqueror’s wife, sees her plight, she takes pity on her.

Catheryn is sent to the castle of the noble FitzOsberns – but will her new captivity be any better than the cruelty she faced at Geffrei’s hands?

She finds her hostess cold and embittered, but when her husband William FitzOsbern returns from the Conquest, Catheryn’s heart is torn by unwanted emotions.

She becomes entangled in the quarrels and heartbreaks of her jailers even as she tries to remember her place among them.

Is she falling in love with the man who helped to destroy her homeland?

Can Catheryn betray her Anglo-Saxon roots, and her late husband?

Or will she break free, and find her way back to Annis?

‘Captives’ is a moving historical story of love and loss, and the strength of one woman even in the most dangerous of times. It is the sequel to ‘Conquests’.

'An enthralling saga.' - Robert Foster, best-selling author of 'The Lunar Code'.

excerpt

Her eyes were shut, and her face was warm. The sunshine was beating down on her aching old bones, and she was enjoying the last of the sunshine of the day. The skirts of her red dress were spread around her, and every muscle within her body was desperate to relax. The summer was truly upon them, and just like every summer before it, Catheryn was worshipping it. She would soon be brown, much to the disgust of her family – but then, her family were nowhere close to her now. She would have the disapproval of others to contend with this summer.

Catheryn sighed, and opened her eyes. It was no good: whatever she attempted to do, she could never completely forget her loneliness, and her longing to be home. As much as Catheryn was acclimatising to her new life, it was as if a flower had been planted in the shade when it loved the sun: it would live, but it would be but a half-life, and that life was worth very little.

The clouds that were moving across the sky did so lazily. There was barely a breeze in the air.

Catheryn raised a hand up, reaching for the white fluffy cloud that was currently wandering across the sky. Her hand moved higher than the grass that was surrounding her, and she chuckled slightly, imagining what a passer-by must think – an arm growing amongst the crops, grasping to catch the sky!

No matter how far she stretched, Catheryn could not quite reach the clouds that looked like they were just beyond her fingertips. Hand still in the air, Catheryn closed her eyes once more, and began to hum one of her favourite lullabies. She had sung it to quieten both of her children when they had been small, and the tune came to her easily.

Images passed before her eyes quickly, as if they were really open, and she had found some way of returning to that favourite country – the past. Her husband, Selwyn, smiled at her, and Annis ran about her, still a toddler, shrieking with delight at the world. Whether memories or imaginings, they brought a smile to Catheryn’s face.

“By God, woman, what are you doing?”

Catheryn jumped up, eyes wide open in shock. Not far away stood one of the largest horses that she had ever seen – black, and huge, and panting wildly. It had obviously been on the move for a very long time; but Catheryn’s expert eye guessed that it had not been moving fast. She had been so wrapped up in her own thoughts that she had not heard its approach. There was a man atop the horse, disbelief and anger in his eyes. He had spoken Norman, a Norman that was harsh and clipped in tone.

Catheryn bristled. “I am…at least, I was lying down on the ground,” she said defiantly, with as much elegance as she could muster at such short notice. “Not that it is any concern of yours,” she added.

“Everything here is my concern,” he said curtly, casting a quick eye over the fields in all directions. “You are a fool, lying there with a hand in the air like an infant. What if I had ridden over you?”

“Then you would have been the fool, not I!” Catheryn said angrily. “I am quite obvious in this green field.” She gestured to the red dress that she was wearing, and then turned a frustrated eye at the man who had so rudely addressed her. “If you cannot see me, then the fool is not the one in a dress.”

The man snorted. “And what do you think you are doing here? I know everyone in this area, and you are not known to me. What right do you have to lounge in this field?”

Catheryn almost spluttered with irritation. “This field is not a holy site, and I may lie in it if I choose! I am the lady Catheryn of the South, a lady of England, and…and a prisoner of the FitzOsbern family.”

The man stared at her. The eyes that Catheryn had taken to be black and brooding seemed clear, like an evening sky. She could now see some blue in them where before had been all darkness.

“The FitzOsbern family?”

Catheryn nodded slowly. She had acted rashly – the same hot temper that she had tried to curb in her daughter had just been unleashed on this poor unsuspecting man, who probably had never spoken to a woman of her birth before. She cast a delicate eye over him, but could discern nothing except that he had travelled a long way. His dark beard covering his face was flecked with grey.

He, in turn, was looking back. His eyes took in the ruffled hair, swept vaguely underneath a veil; an English custom. The dress that she wore was of a fine colour, but seemed slightly torn and unkempt at the edges. She was nearing the peak of womanhood, but there was something hovering around the surface of her eyes.

“You are a ward of the FitzOsbern family?”

Catheryn rolled her eyes. “How many times must I repeat myself? Yes, I am with the FitzOsbern family – although I am more prisoner than ward, more inconvenience than guest.”

The man looked at her for a moment, and then with a heavy sigh that his horse echoed, he dismounted. Turning to face her, he did something that Catheryn could never have expected: he bowed.

“My apologies, my lady Catheryn. I must blame the long ride that I have had on my incivility, but that is no reason to treat a lady in such a disgraceful manner. I trust that I have your forgiveness?”

Catheryn was so confused by this very sudden change in demeanour that she did not reply audibly, but nodded. This man was strange indeed.

“I am William,” the man continued.

Catheryn smiled wanly. “Greetings, William. Have you a longer name?”

The man returned her smile, but it was a lot warmer than her own. “William FitzOsbern. Fitz, to my friends, which I hope to count you as soon, my lady Catheryn.”

“William – FitzOsbern? But then you – ” Catheryn said quickly, “you must be Adeliza’s husband…you are the lord here.”

“And consequently, your jailor,” Fitz smiled. “Although I must admit that I do not like the title at all, despite the fact that it is an incredibly new honour.”

authorinterview

Did you always wanted to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?

I’m probably very similar to other people – I was convinced I was going to be a pop singer, or an author, but I decided pretty early on that my ability to write far outstretched my ability to sing!

When did you first consider yourself a “writer”?

When I received my first royalty payments for my book ‘Conquests: Hearts Rule Kingdoms’. It begins the series that ‘Captives: Kingdoms Rule Hearts’ finishes, and when I finally realized that people were willing to spend money to read my words, that’s when it hit home.

How long did it take to get your first book published?

I’m one of the lucky ones: I was only 22 when my first book was published. Hopefully that means I’ve got a lot of time to fit in more!

Do you do another job except for writing and can you tell us more about it?

I write for a living, but in different ways. During the working week, I work as a copywriter within a marketing company for a large business, and at the weekend I concentrate on my fictional writing.

How long does it usually take you to write a book, from the original idea to finishing writing it?

I find that my books are a labour of love, which often means that I write frantically until I become exhausted – say two or three weeks – leave it for a week, and then come back to it. My first book took me three months, but my third took my longer as I moved from the UK to New Zealand in the middle!

What can we expect from you in the future? ie More books of the same genre? Books of a different genre?

I’m currently working on a really exciting series of six books, all that follow different characters within the same world. They are still historical fiction, but I’ve moved to a different time and place. I can’t reveal any more yet!

Do you have a favorite character from your books? And why are they your favorite?

I find it difficult not to love Avis, one of my female characters in the ‘Conquered Hearts’ series. She’s feisty, and angry, but loyal to the point of putting herself in danger. I slightly based her on one of my favourite people in the whole world – and she has no idea!

How long have you been writing?, and who or what inspired you to write?

I am really fortunate to have parents that really respect knowledge and books, and so I was always encouraged to read when I was young. I was also never explicitly, but always implicitly told that I could do anything if I worked hard enough. However, it wasn’t until my boyfriend – now husband – told me to be more serious with my writing that I started finishing off my novels.

Do you have a certain routine you have for writing? ie You listen to music, sit in a certain chair?

I’m a morning person, so I always find that my most productive times come before lunch time. After I’ve had lunch, I can’t usually write anything new, so I go over yesterday’s work as an editor, and hope that I’m left with something useful!

Do you read all the reviews of your book/books?

I do . . . for better or for worse! What my readers think really matters to me, and sometimes that can be a heavy burden to bear. But it is certainly lovely to hear some of the positive comments about what I have written.

How do you come up with characters names and place names in your books?

I have a MA in Medieval Studies, so much of the framework for my books has come from my research and my studies. There will often be a place that I love the sound of, and then the more I look into it the more I realise that it is perfect as a setting.

Which format of book do you prefer, eBook, hardback, or paperback?

Before I first got my Kindle, I was adamant that it was attempting to destroy physical books. All of my favourite books I have in hardback – but when I finally gave in and treated myself to a Kindle, my eyes were opened. I could access so many more books through eBooks, and so I buy eBooks when I’m trying something new, paperbacks of authors that I enjoy, and hardbacks of books I want to keep forever.

Do you think books transfer to movies well? Which is you favorite/worst book to movie transfer?

Books will always be able to transfer to movies – and movies to books – as long as the directors, script writers, producers, actors, and anyone else involved – is really sympathetic to what the book is trying to do. I’m happy to see a film that alters the book slightly, as long as they still create the atmosphere and the feelings of the books. I loved the way that the Harry Potter books were done; obviously not every scene or every line appeared on screen, but you definitely get the sense of loyalty, courage, and friendship that pores from every page J K Rowling wrote.

Your favorite food is?

Cheese, of any sort, on anything!

Your favorite color is?

Blue.

Your favorite Author is?

Anyone who is writing with passion and enthusiasm.

The sexy and persistent wolf wants to claim the leopardess, but she’s not going down without a fight.

Ezekiel is used to getting what he wants and his eyes are set on his seductive target. Yet predicting Amilynn’s next move is fruitless. He’s caught between admiring her strength and resenting it. Does he dominate or submit? Can he prove to Amilynn she really is worth the fight?

When a ghost from Amilynn’s past stalks their family, Ezekiel will learn her true strength. Amilynn isn’t a docile house cat and, by the time she’s done, everyone will know it.

excerpt

AMILYNN SNUGGLED INTO the warm arms that were around her. God, Ezekiel smelled like heaven. The sweet honey of his mating scent filled her mind and made her inner leopard purr with desire. It was so easy to sleep when his strong arms held her close and kept her safe. He was there for her in her time of distress, waiting to see if her best friend would pull through the night. He’d given his own blood to save Vivian’s life. Amilynn never thought she could find peace in the middle of a hospital, in the midst of a catastrophe like this, and yet Ezekiel gave it to her.

Her cat had never been more satisfied, even if he was a wolf.

While Ezekiel kept her safe, Ami could focus on the crisis at hand. Vivian had to live. She had to make it. If there was no hope for Vivian to live a full life of love and happiness, then what chance did Amilynn have? Vivian was wilder, more feral in her independence than Ami and, somehow, she’d found a mate in Kasey Blackburn who was worthy of her devotion. The wolf alpha had shown his love for Vivian time and time again, gaining the trust of the rest of her Pride. But look where it got them. The songs were bullshit. Love is not all you need.

Vivian fought for her life in that hospital because members of Kasey’s Pack didn’t want the Pride coming in. The feline shifters didn’t belong there, so they said. The Pack might be a mixture of wolves and bear, but adding felines to the mix was more than some of them could handle. The rebellious group had done a fine job of letting Amilynn and her family know they weren’t welcome.

Amilynn, in particular, had been warned off the males of the Pack. Here she sat in Ezekiel’s arms, the arms of a future alpha. Wouldn’t that cause another rebellion? The hookers and hounds, what a mess.

Her cat came to attention when a rumbling in Ezekiel’s chest woke her up. The low growl was aggressive and full of warning. Her eyes popped open, ready to defend her family at any cost.

“Easy, fool,” Tyrone, her brother, warned Ezekiel in gravelly bass.

Ezekiel, who had also been awakened with a start, gripped Ty’s hand. It took a couple of seconds for all of them to realize there was no threat.

“V’s awake.” Ty yanked from Ezekiel’s grasp.

Amilynn didn’t hesitate to uncurl from Ezekiel’s lap and follow Ty. She didn’t look back, couldn’t. Once she was in her right mind, she would explain to Ezekiel that there was no way they were going to be together. They were too different.

Ami took her first easy breath when she saw Vivian’s eyes open. They were half crossed, but they were open. Relief and love bubbled over her, creating a wave of deep emotion she didn’t know how to process. She could cry, but who had time for hormonal drama? When Vivian smiled at her, she had to blink back the tears. Damn. This was not cool.

“Well,” Ami said, needing to escape with her dignity. “Since Kasey is stuck up your ass, and you’re in good hands, I’m going to jet.” She sniffed and made sure not to look Vivian in the eyes again. “Glad you’re awake.” Without another word, she left the hospital room. Her chest constricted so tightly, she could’ve passed out.

“Here.” Ty tossed her a set of keys. Of course her brother would know she didn’t want anyone to see her lose her shit. She gave him a nod and bolted from the hospital. Go figure; they were to Ezekiel’s motorcycle. At least if she cried while she was on the bike, she could blame it on the wind in her eyes. Sometimes being a girl sucked.

Describe yourself what is your worst and best quality?

Worst: Well, Bianca says I have a potty mouth because I like the F-word. So I’ll go with that. Best: There are so many! Just ask 14 year old twins Nate and Tom, they seem to think I hung the moon.

What is the one thing you wish other people knew about you?

I only eat dinner so that I can have dessert. Seriously. I could eat cake every meal of the day and have no problems working out twenty-three hours a day just so I could.

What is your biggest secret something no one knows about?

I’ve been curious about sleeping with a wolf since the first moment I met Ezekiel. I wanted to ask Vivian what it was like, but that would give me away. I mean, come on, doggie style…with a wolf shapeshifter. Wouldn’t you be curious too?

What are you most afraid of?

Honestly, not much. But I’m not looking forward to facing the Nevada Pride head on. The battle is coming, but I’d give anything to avoid it.

What do you want more than anything?

Peace. Our little Blake Pride has had far too much commotion and uproar for one lifetime. I want my family to be settled and happy so Melissa and Tyrone can pop out some kittens for me to love on.

What is your relationship status?

F-ed up. You think they have an emoticon for that on Facebook?

How would you describe your sense of fashion?

I’ll just say there’s a reason Vivian comes to me for fashion advice. Best thing about being a shifter is that we can conjure clothing with each shift. All we have to do is think of what we want. I read lots of fashion magazines and take pride in being well dressed…and sexy as hell, that’s a priority too.

How much of a rebel are you?

Kasey, alpha of the Blackburn Pack, would tell you I’m a major pain in the a$$. He’s given me a few commands that I may or may not have obeyed. I admit to nothing.

What do you considered to be your greatest achievement?

I haven’t killed a single wolf since our feline Pride joined up with the Pack. Haha, I’m kidding. My greatest achievement is keeping my family safe thus far. They are all that matter.

What is your idea of happiness?

Eating cake and seeing Ezekiel naked…preferably at the same time. Yeah, that ‘bout sums it up.

What is your current state of mind?

Currently and consistently chaotic. I’m always going ninety miles per hour.

What is your most treasured possession?

Since we have been on the run for the last 5 years, I put little stock into possessions. My only possessions were my weapons. But now that we’ve settled with the Blackburn Pack, I have to say I love my shoes. Yeah, I know, weapons and shoes don’t really mingle with most people, but they do with me.

What is your most marked characteristic?

I’m mouthy…so they say. But I don’t see it. (bats eyelashes innocently)

What is it that you, most dislike?

Eating healthy. Ugh. I know it’s important with all those green vegetables and all, but I’m a friggin leapard! Give me MEAT!

Which living person do you, most despise?

Brian, my “trainer” from Nevada. Major douche. But I’ll take care of him.

What is your greatest regret?

I don’t think we have time to go over this list. But I will say having to explain to Nate and Tom, the teenage twins, that I used to be a prostitute was pretty harsh.

What is the quality you most like in a man?

If Ezekiel has it, it’s my favorite. He’s funny, he’s sexy, he’s vigorous(wink, wink).

What is the quality you most like in a woman?

I’ve done a lot of things, but I haven’t crossed that line. Next.

Who is your favorite hero in fiction?

Batman. He has some seriously bada$$ toys!

Which living person do you most admire?

Vivian. She’s my hero. With everything she’s been through (which you can read about in PRIDE BEFORE THE FALL) she has still come out on top. I want to be like her when I grow up. LOL.

If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?

I would say my past, but it has lead to my current state, so I guess nothing.

What is your motto?

“Never gave a wild spirit.” I have it tattooed on my side.

Book Description:

Ruby dreams of Hollywood. A chance encounter with The Harmoneers, an all-female jazz group, offers the opportunity of a lifetime. Follow the gang as they scheme and double-cross.

And love?

Well, it don’t mean a thing.

excerpt

Sycamore Grove, California

1931

“I’m not marrying you, Audie McCardle. I most certainly am not.” Ruby Banks crossed her arms, pressed her lips tight, and gave a definitive shake of her head. She leaned toward the mirror over her hand-me-down vanity and stabbed a pin into her blonde curls. She twisted her head left and right, and fluffed the back of her hair. A strange tint of pink ran loose through the strands and waves. Maybe she should have been more careful with the mixture of peroxide and ammonia she’d used the previous night.

But between her mother running up the stairs and hugging her close, her father taking his pipe from his mouth long enough to yell that the hair potion was causing him an onset of lung disorder, and her little sister, Charlotte, jumping around and squawking nonsense about weddings weddings weddings, Ruby botched the dye job.

Never mind, she thought. If anyone asked, she’d say it was exactly the color she was hoping for.

Or she wouldn’t say anything at all. Jean Harlow wouldn’t say anything. Of that Ruby Banks was sure.

She snatched her apron from the end of her bed, bounded down the narrow stairs, and ignored her mother calling from the kitchen. Ruby pushed open the front gate and darted down the sidewalk. She was late (as usual) for her morning shift at the diner, and she still had to pick up the pies from Mrs. Jensen on the next block.

The early morning sun promised another day of horrible Central California heat. The sky would soon brown with the upturned soils of the fields, and the air already stank from the cows.

A beat-up Model T stake-bed truck rolled past Ruby. She heard the tires slow on the hard-packed soil of the street. Gears ground, and the truck reversed and pulled next to her.

John Mayer shifted his stub of a cigar to the other side of his mouth, tilted back his fedora, and smiled. His skin was bronze and wrinkled. He rubbed a weathered thumb across his chin. “Guess congratulations are in order.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Ruby lifted her head and continued walking. John Mayer kept the truck rolling slowly in reverse.

“Fine boy, Audie is.”

“So everyone says.”

“You make a sweet couple.”

“We’re not a couple.”

He scratched the shirt on his chest. “You don’t say.”

“He can buy any house he pleases in the Sears Roebuck catalog, but that doesn’t mean we’re a couple. And it certainly doesn’t mean I’m going to marry him.”

“You don’t say.”

“I do say. I have plans of my own.” She blew back a curl that had come loose. “Don’t you have some hogs to tie or something like that?”

“I don’t have hogs.”

“You know what I’m saying.”

He chewed his cigar then shifted the gears. The truck took a jump and shimmied. “You got a mean streak, Ruby. Yes, miss, you do.” With that, he was off down the road in a swirl of dirt.

Ruby wiped her mouth with her handkerchief. She patted her hair and strode up the wood steps to Mrs. Jensen’s porch. She knocked three times on the screen door frame and stepped back. Mrs. Jensen shuffled to the door, balancing five boxes of peach pies.

Only the top of half of her face was visible above the stack. She passed the boxes to Ruby and wiped her hands on a flour-coated apron. “I hear congratulations are in order.”

“Aw, nuts.”

Ruby’s heels cracked against the pavement. She passed the Esso station and VFW Hall and drew near the two blocks that made up Sycamore Grove’s downtown. The neon spire of the Odeon dwarfed the squat brick of its neighbors. She glared up, worried that this upcoming non-wedding would be splattered in black and white across the marquee. Luckily not. It remained safely Gable and Harlow in Red Dust.

Maud Riley stood under the awning of Rexall Drugs, waiting, as she always did, for Ruby. Her gray felt cloche sat low on her head, the nutmeg tufts of her bob feathered under the soft rim. She shifted from foot to foot, tapping her fingers against her black-and mustard-checked skirt. As Ruby neared, Maud narrowed her eyes and blinked fast before shaking her head. She pursed her lips and twisted them into a strained smile.

“What’s wrong with you?” Ruby asked.

Maud’s eyebrows met in a frown. “Nothing. Not a thing.” She waved her hand for no reason that Ruby could ascertain and fell in step beside her. “I guess I have to wish —”

“Don’t you start.” She shifted the pies to her hip. “I can tolerate all the little gifts he gives me. I mean, a girl does need emery boards and cologne. But buying a house? That’s called unbounded impudence.”

“I think it was just a down payment.”

“It’s still a lot of cheek. What does he think? I’m going to roll over like a, like a starving dog and do whatever he commands?” Ruby stopped in front of the diner, set the boxes on the cement and faced Maud. “He hasn’t even asked me to marry him. And you know what? When he does, I’m going to laugh like this — HA-ha. Because I’ve got all that money Aunt Caroline left me, and come September, I’m going to take the bus to Merced and then the train to Hollywood. And in neither of those vehicles can you fit a Sears and Roebuck house and an ego the size of Audie McCardle’s. And when he comes in for breakfast, I’m going to tell him so.”

Maud crossed her arms over her thin frame and swayed back and forth.

“You got something to say, just say it.”

Maud bit her lip and shrugged.

“What does that mean?”

“It means nothing.” Maud swung her gaze around the street and up at the Odeon spire and then stared over her shoulder at the empty diner. “You like my skirt?”

“What?”

“I wore it just for you. So you could see how the pattern came out. And such.” She gave that funny wave again, as if she were swatting a big bug. “Never mind. I’ve got an early piano lesson to give.”

“Well, don’t let me keep you.” Ruby bent to pick up the pies. “Would you mind opening the door for me? I mean, if you have time.”

“I always have time for you.”

“Are you all right?”

“Of course I’m all right. Why?”

“You’re red as a beet.”

Maud put the flats of her palms against her cheeks, turned on her heel, and rushed away, the bell of her skirt flapping against her knees.

“But the door, Maud … ”

Which living person do you most admire?

Amelia Earhart, though I’m still a bit hurt she chose George Putnam over me. (Viv made me cross that out, and told me to stop with the flat out lying.)
