Why Dragons?

Hi everyone, my name is Leila Gaskin and I am the author of Hot Flashes. Thank you Janine for allowing me to post on Eclipse Reviews, you are contributing to my ever-growing reading list.

I’m going to start with a simple question - why dragons? We don’t see enough dragons. One agent, whose blog I followed, said dragons were passé.

Really? I think not. Dragons are the things of legend and myth. How could they be passé?

I was that kid who had her nose in a book from the time she figured out the words on the page would take me to a different world. In second grade, my elementary school librarian noticed my ability to check out a book (or two) and have them back in a day. These were chapter books I was blowing through. By the end of that year, I’d read everything in the middle-grade fiction section and, with the subtle guidance of Mrs. Ponce, was rapidly moving through the non-fiction section.

Then I discovered science fiction and fantasy. By the time I reached 6th grade, I’d read the Lord of the Rings – twice. Then, I read the Hobbit and thought Smaug was awesome. He took what he wanted and bathed in gold. How cool was that?

About 8th grade I discovered Anne McCaffrey and fell in love with both the dragons and the dragon riders. This love affair with dragons firmly cemented me into the nerd category for the rest of my formative educational experience.

In Hot Flashes, I wanted a different take on dragons. What if dragons were really a shape-shifting race from another world (I love ‘what if’ questions)? And so Ella’s story was born.

Hot Flashes is about Ella’s journey into the unknown as she learns about her heritage. No more ordinary days for Ella. I hope you enjoy the book.

Bright Skies,

Leila

I couldn’t agree more Leila! Dragons are one of my top paranormal creatures to read about. If you love Dragons as much as I do, go check out today’s book blitz and find out more about Ella and her world in Hot Flashes.
