It wasn't your everyday protection detail of a Senator plus trophy wife. First, she was no trophy. She came with brains and an attitude. Just what he liked. And two, the case was all kinds of screwed up. A threat with no name on it. Maybe even a leak. And it all turned to hell when the Senator got taken down by a sniper shot.

Devon Monroe still doesn't know what the hell went wrong that day. But he's not going to let it happen again. Someone's serious with an itchy trigger finger, and this time the target is squarely pointed at a certain Senator's beautiful widow. But not if he can help it. authorinterview

Did you always wanted to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?

Nope.  I didn't even know I had writer in me until I started college to become a scientist.  And even then, I still went on to become a scientist, then educator, then I realized I was a writer as well as an educator.  So now I do both.  I loved being a scientist, too.  But then I loved being an educator and writer more.

When did you first consider yourself a “writer”?

Well, I wrote all the time.  Essays for scholarships.  Personal statements to get into graduate school.  Letters of request.  I communicate, written or otherwise.  I'm just that kind of girl.  But it wasn't until after I finished writing my first novel that I started thinking of myself as a writer.  All while writing it, I was too frightened people would laugh at me.  It wasn't until after I started hearing from readers telling me that they loved my story that I started to believe in being an author.  I was a writer long before I became an author of books.

How long did it take to get your first book published?

About five years.

Do you do another job except for writing and can you tell us more about it?

I’m an adult/higher-ed educator, mentor, tutor, and advisor.  It it’s related to student success, it’s my kind of thing.

What is the name of your latest book, and if you had to summarize it in less than 20 words what would you say?

Love AND Revenge.  Love. Revenge.  Very determined ex-Navy SEAL.  Non-stop action.  Good guys.  Bad guys.  Things blow up.  Tension.  Tears.  Happiness.

How long does it usually take you to write a book, from the original idea to finishing writing it?

Depends on the deadline I give myself and what finished means.  It took me nearly five years to take my first book Love AND Bullets from concept to printed book, including all the rounds of edits, beta reads, cover art, etc.  I wrote Dip & Devour in 6 weeks.  I wrote Love AND Revenge in 8 weeks.  If you add in the beta reads, edits, and cover art—all the work to completion and publication date—Love AND Revenge took about six months.

What can we expect from you in the future?  ie More books of the same genre? Books of a different genre?

Depends on where my mood takes me when I get done with the blog tour.   I have about 20 future book ideas roughed out with premise, internal conflict, and main characters … that sort of thing.  I love action and comedy and am exploring some other ideas.  We'll just have to see where my creative moment takes me.

What genre would you place your books into?

Rom-Com or Romantic Action Suspense.  The Love AND … series is Romantic Action Suspense with heroes who are ex-FBI or ex-Special Forces guys or cops.

What made you decide to write that genre of book?

Write what you love.  I love comedy, action, and love!

Do you have a favorite character from your books? And why are they your favorite?

I love all my characters, but Maddie Monroe has a super special place in my heart.  She resonates with me, and I can relate to her.

How long have you been writing?, and who or what inspired you to write?

I’ve been writing since college.

Loretta Crum.  She was my composition instructor in college, two semesters in a row.  She taught me how to spot fallacy and write persuasively—which to be honest, is probably one of the most lucrative skills I’ve learned.  I’ve gone to grad school three times using those writing skills (and two of those times were for free with an included stipend, a.k.a. free living money).  I’ve won scholarships with essays I’ve written.  I tutor and mentor students.  I even convinced a builder to install nearly $10,000 of crown molding in our house for free.

But it wasn’t until my second grad program that a fellow student thinking I needed some fun in my life handed me a romance novel.  I “ate” it like it was candy.  A hundred plus romance novels later—in love with the happiness of them—I said to myself, “I can do this.”  So I did.

And now I’ve written five books (three in a series, one stand-alone, and a kid’s book).

Do you have a certain routine you have for writing? ie You listen to music, sit in a certain chair?

Write until I drop.  Sleep.  Write until I drop.  Sleep.  Rinse and repeat.  Sometimes I listen to music.  Sometimes I need silence.  I always have food nearby and ready to go, or I starve ... because once I am in the zone, sixteen hours can slip by easily before I realize that I'm hungry.

Do you read all the reviews of your book/books?

Yep.

Do you choose a title first, or write the book then choose the title?

Depends on the book.  It took me a while to figure out the title for Love AND Bullets.  I was well into writing it before I figured it out.  But I’ve had titles ready to go for all the other books.

How do you come up with characters names in your books?

I go with how it feels.  This character feels like an Emma June, this character is a Mack.  First names are easy-peasy.  It's the last names that I work at.  Then I break out a surname search online until I find something that I feel works.

Are character names and place names decided after their creation? Or do you pick a character/place name and then invent them?

So far, names come first.  Although, every once in a while one of my secondary characters have compelled me to rethink who they are.  This could be true of any character really as I let my stories develop organically.  I allow my characters to make decisions for themselves.  I’m a very character driven writer.  So if one of them said to me that they really no longer felt like a Max, for instance, I’d listen.

Do you decide on character traits (ie shy, quiet, tomboy girl) before writing the whole book or as you go along?

Before.  I need to know who my characters are to know how they think and act.  Until I know how they think and act, the plot can't move forward.  I need to know how they will make decisions.  As I mentioned, I’m very character driven in my writing.  However, as people can change and grow when faced with life, so can my characters.  I allow for growth and character development.  That’s part of the fun of writing.  I get to see who my characters are and who they become.

Are there any hidden messages or morals contained in your books? (Morals as in like Aesops Fables type of "The moral of this story is..")

Sort of.  Be good people.  Eat well.  Make good decisions.  Think.  My characters oftentimes, but not always, support ideas that are important to me.

Which format of book do you prefer, eBook, hardback, or paperback?

I don’t have a preference.  Whichever I can get my hands on.  I love to read.

Do you think books transfer to movies well? Which is you favorite/worst book to movie transfer?

Depends on far too many factors to make a generalized assertion.  Directors.  Screenplay.  Producers.  Actors.  If the involved parties want to do a good job, then the potential is there for them to do it.  Sometimes it's just money talking, and then, usually it gets pretty screwed up.

Worst is Battlefield Earth.  Best LOTR.

Your favorite food is?

Chocolate and fruit smoothies.  I live on them.
